Motivating Puzzles

Puzzles, as we have said before, can be effective tools for revealing the subtle interplay between physics and math. And they can be particularly useful in illustrating the link between symmetry and conservation laws, as the following examples hopefully reveal.

Puzzle

Our assignment, should we choose to accept, is to cover a standard chessboard (of 64 squares) with dominoes. Each domino covers two adjacent squares. The catch is that we have only 31 pieces of domino, which will leave two squares uncovered (Fig. 8 ). Can we arrange the dominoes to cover all the squares except for the two diagonally opposite corners of the board?
