A Teachable Moment

A teacher explained the following theorem in class: If M is an n \times n matrix, then \det(M-\lambda I) = P(\lambda) is a polynomial of degree n in \lambda , called the characteristic polynomial of M . It is a fact that P(M) = 0 , called the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem. In other words, a matrix satisfies its own characteristic equation.
